2024, ongoing – Soave, Verona, Italy – City walls
The city walls of Soave, dating back to the 14th century, represent one of the best-preserved medieval defensive systems in the Veneto region. Built during the Scaliger dominion, the walls extend for approximately 1.6 km, enclosing the historic center and connecting to the castle that overlooks the town. Composed of local stone masonry and characterized by a regular sequence of towers and walkways, the structure is subject to structural and environmental deterioration. Expin carried out an experimental investigation campaign aimed at characterizing the foundation and elevation structures of the southern and eastern section of the walls (including geometric and material surveys of the foundations, ground-penetrating radar surveys, and videoscope inspections). Expin also installed a static monitoring system that includes crack gauges, inclinometers, and environmental temperature sensors; the system, still in its data acquisition phase, is designed to track environmental condition changes and monitor structural movements and deformations.
